Press Release: Robbie McEwen and Robbie Hunter to Team RadioShack

December 23, 2010 Sprinters Robbie McEwen and Robbie Hunter are joining Team RadioShack in 2011. Both riders were part of the Pegasus Sports project which failed to get a ProTour or Professional Continental license for the upcoming season and opted to change teams. The negotiations between the Team and riders were settled promptly with both riders keen on joining the team of Manager Johan Bruyneel and seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong. Australian Robbie McEwen is a triple winner of the Tour de France's green jersey sprinter’s classification. Robbie Hunter became the first South African to compete in the Tour de France. Later he was the first South African rider to win a stage in the Tour.

Trek World Racing 2011 downhill roster

23 Degrees Sports Management is thrilled to announce the addition of Aaron Gwin (USA) to the Trek World Racing 2011 downhill roster. Currently the UCI World #3 rider, Gwin will race a Team-issued Trek Session 88 throughout the 2011 World Cup calendar alongside his Trek World Racing teammates. Returning for 2011 will be World Champion Tracy Moseley (GBR), World Silver Medalist Neko Mulally (USA), and World Top 10 rider Justin Leov (NZL). All three riders have had their best career years while riding aboard Trek, and are looking forward to welcoming Aaron to the team.

We recently donated a bike to the Noosa Heads Lions Club for ther Pets and People Photo Competition and were wrapped to hear that little Ada Melinz was the winner of the bike. Ada's bike was recently ruined when run over by a car in their driveway. The money raised from the competition goes to the People and Pets Project, which assists pensioners and low-income families with the cost of desexing and micro-chipping their pets. So far more than 50 local families have been assisted.

Taylor Phinney wins the Time Trial in Geelong on a Trek.

Taylor Phinney (USA) has beaten local favourite, Luke Durbridge to win the U23 men's time trial at the 2010 world championships in Geelong, with Marcel Kittel (Germany) finishing third.

Emma Pooley (GBR) won the women's division and has become the first British rider to win the women's world time trial.

Along what is commonly believed to be the second toughest course on the Ironman circuit, Joe Gambles (AUS) used his team-issue Trek Speed Concept to conserve the vital energy he would need to dominate the run. The SRAM Red R2C shifters and Bontrager Aeolus 9.0 wheels-equipped Speed Concept turned out to be the perfect choice as Gambles utilized the stored giddy-up to take the lead at mile 11 of the run. "To win in one of my biggest supporters’ backyard is absolute magic.”

It was Trek/K-Swiss triathletes Chris Lieto (USA) and Julie Dibbens (UK) who swept the tops of the podiums at the Nautica Malibu Triathlon. Lieto took top honors in the Pro Classic division while his teammate Dibbens snapped the tape in the Women’s International competition.

Other notable finishes from Sunday were Trek/K-Swiss’ Paul Matthews (AUS) who used a record bike leg in the Subaru Ironman 70.3 Maskota to pull off a second place finish and Trek-sponsored Blake Becker’s (USA) fifth place finish in his hometown at the Wisconsin Ironman.

Ben King gave the Trek-Livestrong U23 team its second professional title of the weekend with a brilliant solo effort from the day-long breakaway. Following on teammate Taylor Phinney's success in the time trial, the 21-year-old from Virginia crowned his season with the US Professional road championship title. It was one of the most memorable rides in US history.

Following a super successful World Championships, the four Downhill riders for Trek World Racing took part in the final round of the growing Pro GRT series in Whiteface, NY, last weekend.

In the Pro Men's event, the team went 1-2-3, while recently crowned World Champion Tracy Moseley decimated the small Pro Women's field.

In a race that saw Trek World Racing's Mathias Flueckiger as far back as 16th on lap one, and with a front puncture on lap 2, the 21 year old Swiss rider showed immense maturity and race intelligence to return to the head of the race without over exerting himself, yet staying on the limit throughout the race to win the World Championships by 30 seconds. I can honestly say the new 2011 Top Fuel bike was the main reason I won. It was super light in the climbs, and the Fox suspension was set up perfectly for the technical descents.

Jose Antonio Hermida (Spain) wins his first elite world championship title
In his 14-year-long career, Jose Antonio Hermida had never won an elite men's world championship cross country race. All that changed on Saturday afternoon at Mont-Sainte-Anne in Quebec, Canada. In taking the victory, he also brought Spain its first elite men's cross country gold medal. Jaroslav Kulhavy earned the silver medal for Czech while Burry Stander gave South Africa its first elite cross country medal with the bronze.

Venture Cycles' Sam Fraser gets some air in the Downhill Series.

The fifth round of the Sunshine Series Mountain Bike Downhill Series was held at the Gravity MTB club’s Sunshine Coast home track at Kenilworth.

A hundred and eighty competitors tested their skills against a highly regarded course, with a vertical drop of more than 300m and speeds of up to 70kmh over rough, rocky and dusty terrain. Noosa young gun,

16-year-old Sam Fraser, riding for Venture Cycles, raced in the junior elite category.

This is one of the sport’s toughest classes. Sam won this class on the weekend by 0.5 of a second with a near perfect race run, raising the banner for the Gravity MTB Club and Venture Cycles.

Road: Frank & Andy Schleck to ride for Trek in 2011

Brothers Frank and Andy Schleck, will be part of the Trek Family for 2011 and beyond. Though the full roster and title sponsor are yet to be announced, both Frank and Andy Schleck have confirmed that they are racing for the newly formed team. “We looked at a number of equipment suppliers, but our goals are to win the Tour de France and be the #1 team in the World. Trek has the best equipment, along with more experience and expertise to help make that happen"said Team General Manager Brian Nygaard. Trek will use its experience gained in winning 9 of the last 12 Tours de France to supply the team with technical direction ranging from race day wheel and component selection to fit and sizing guidance on its Madone and Speed Concept time trial platforms. The partnership with the Luxembourg team is in addition to Trek’s current relationship with Team Radio Shack. Both teams will be riding Trek for 2011

Australian MTB & Trials Team for Worlds Championships

The Championships will be held from August 31 to September 5 in Mont-Sainte-Anne, Canada. Mountain Bike Australia (MTBA) High Performance Manager Chris Clarke, said he was confident the squad will deliver some great results. “This is a very competitive team across the board led by our two reigning world champions Caroline Buchanan and Jared Graves,” Clarke said. “We have a good mix of riders who have the experience and know what it takes to compete and win on the world stage, and those who will benefit greatly from the experience of these leaders and the international competition.”

What a great day. Even though it rained and the race was shortened to 9 hours I reckon everyone had an awesome time. Bikes and riders were wet and caked in mud. A huge shout out to Jez for keeping the bikes clean and running superbly. Thanks to everyone who worked towards putting on a great event for such a good cause. Congratulations to all the competitors, guys and girls, for the effort you put in through all that mud.

Venture Cycles will have a team competing in the Noosa 000 12 hour challenge at Pomona on Saturday 17th April . This is a great event and raises money for the Royal Childrens Hospital Foundation. We will have a tent there so if you are looking for something to do on Saturday

Our good friend, Richard, recently competed in five days of mountain biking, race stages that took him from the highest mountains in Australia, across snowgum lined plains, down along rainforest lined creeks and out to finish with his wheels in the sand and surf. Snaking singletrack, 'wind through the helmet' downhills, challenging uphills and some of the most varied scenery you could want." Richard was the oldest rider by 6 years and oldest finisher by 10 years. There was 404 kms of racing with 7,622 vertical metres of climbing. He finished 5th in his age group (50 and over). That's a huge ride and teriffic achievement Richard. Inspiring as always.

The Pedal Powered Hope project is bringing hope to rural communities in Malawi devastated by HIV/AIDS. In these communities, Community Health Workers are performing lifesaving work to bring healthcare services to the sick on a community level. CHWs work within communities, travelling from village to village assisting the formal healthcare sector: dispensing medication, educating patients on the proper ways to take medication, doing in-home support, etc...

RIP James Williamson

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of James Williamson who passed away at the Absa Cape Epic bike race in South Africa. James from Canberra, was an International Mountain Bike Rider and the Editor of the Australian Enduro magazine. On Tuesday the Absa Cape Epic was stunned at the news that Australian 26-year old former world mountain biker James Williamson had failed to wake from his sleep and died shortly before the start of the third stage. Kevin McCallum from IOL South Africa wrote: "Somewhere in the universe, Williamson will be watching and loving every pedal stroke, every bit of pain, every drop of sweat. He will love that they are enjoying being alive to the fullest." RIP James.

Canberra Round 4 - Stromlo

*Start of the week I stayed at the AIS for the Australian long team. Was a great camp learning and focusing on media, nutrition, training and getting to know the rest of the team.( from Tuesday until Thursday)
*On Friday I started to do some downhill runs and noticed that my bike shock was giving me some trouble but I was still able to get all my lines dialled in. For the next 2 days I tried to adjust the shock but unfortunately this made no difference and I decided I was just going to have to get on with it and try to block it out.

*Come Sunday I had to change some small lines through the rock garden as my bike wasn’t able to handle the rough lines.

Race run

My Race run was good, I felt I lost a bit of time in the rock garden and a small section after the G20 but the rest of the run was pretty good. I ended up 3rd with a time of 2.46sec. I was happy with 3rd considering the drama with my rear shock that I was having most of the week and I

felt I did the best I possibly could , who knows what the result may have been, if I hadn’t had bike trouble.

Currently
I have replaced my shock and have just finished rebuilding my forks as well as bike for the Oceania’s in New Zealand. Which I will be leaving for on Thursday.

One of our good customers, Richard, recently won the Freedom MTB Marathon in Byron Bay - one of the toughest 40km Mountain bike races in the country. Helping Richard with his win was a new bike we custom-made for him. Richard spoke to us about increasing his speed so we adapted a hammerschmidt system, usually for free ride/all mountain bikes, to a light weight cross country single speed making it a dual speed with all the

advantages of a single speed. We had a titanium 'Litespeed' dual suspension frame custom made for this application. As far as we know this is the only dual speed/hammerschmidt setup in Australia.
